Every time I hear the words kindred spirits I’m reminded of Anne of Green Gables.
“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.” – Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
I looked up this definition, and by itself, it’s pretty droll: a person whose interests or attitudes are similar to one’s own. Boring!!!
This doesn’t even BEGIN to describe a kindred spirit. I much prefer Anne of Green Gable’s view. There are so many people out there like us with similar experiences, and the more we get to know people, the more kindred spirits we’ll find.
It’s through these connections that we can bless others, and be blessed by others. How many times you have gone through a wicked experience and have had someone walk beside you through the muck and the mire? That’s where kindred spirits are born. You are sharing and bonding together over a unique, beautiful, horrific, or exciting adventure.
Have you ever talked to someone for the first time and you’ve felt like you’ve known them forever?! Dude, that’s a kindred spirit. You walk the walk and talk the talk – you seem to know each other’s thoughts and actions. Call it what you will – two peas in a pod, twinkies, two of a kind, Bobsey twins (for those of you have read the books), or simply kindred spirits. 🙂
Sometimes kindred spirits are born through shared experiences and sometimes those connections happen almost instantaneously. My husband and I had our first real conversation the first time we met. I knew when I walked out of the college library that day that I would marry him. I had an instant connection with him. We were kindred spirits and soul mates and have never been apart since then (that was in 1993 by the way).
Other times I’ve had experiences that brought me into contact with others. When we lost our daughter in 2011, kindred spirits arose between us and many people from our church. And now, we continue to be blessed by these friendships.
I love that God blesses us with kindred spirits – those that we just connect with for whatever reason and whatever season of life we are in. I pray that you’ve found at least one kindred spirit out there. They make life that much more fun, entertaining, and I’m blessed to know some kindred spirits.
