I really dislike spending money on things that I can make here at home, or use an alternative that’s either safer to use or cheaper. Over the years I’ve tried quite a few recipes. My point is, use what you have and go from there. Branch out and try something new. If one recipe isn’t for you, try another one.
For me, I love soft laundry, especially since I try to line-dry my laundry when the weather permits.
Check out these recipes and let me know what you think.
RECIPE #1
6 cups vinegar
1 cup water
1 cup baking soda
15 drops essential oil (your choice)
Combine all ingredients in a tall, heavy plastic container. Add one cup in the final rinse cycle.
NOTE: Be sure the container you use is very tall as this mixture will bubble profusely due to the the vinegar & baking soda mixture. Also, DO NOT shake it up because it will shower you with softener!!! (Been there, done that – not fun). (Recipe by Karyn Siegel-Maier from The Naturally Clean Home)
RECIPE #2
1 bottle of conditioner (yes, hair conditioner)
I didn’t think it would work either, but it does. I did this for quite awhile and our laundry smelled great and was soft.
RECIPE #3
1 cup vinegar
This is especially good for whites. It is better than bleach and does not smell like vinegar at all. It’s a minimalist approach to fabric softener but it does a great job.
